Tyrian Purple

Anthropologie has been experimenting with natural dyes whilst creating their iconic window displays. This year's summer displays featured larger than life paper flowers, the visual appeal only intensified by careful blends of all natural colour.

Natural dyes have been used since ancient times and may be derived from countless colour rich sources including beetroot, pomegranate and saffron. Rare luxurious colours such as Tyrian purple, found only in certain species of sea snail, were particularly coveted during the time of the Roman Empire that subsequently placed a strict monopoly on their use.

This method of dyeing not only allows for artists and textile makers to work with a subtler range of colours, it provides an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic dyes.
